High Commissioner of the Republic of Zambia to Barbados, Kennedy Mpolobe Shepande, recently paid an introductory courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds, where they discussed the potential for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

In response, Minister Symmonds indicated that cooperation could be facilitated between the two countries in various ways, including joint cultural exchange programmes that could assist in promoting Barbados’ and Zambia’s tourism products globally.

He also raised the possibility of expertise and knowledge sharing/training in the area of cultural heritage, notably heritage site preservation. Barbados and Zambia are both State Parties to the World Heritage Convention, with Zambia being home to numerous historical landmarks, including ancient settlements, traditional chiefdom sites, and remnants of colonial history.

Minister Symmonds noted that those sites provide insight into the nation’s diverse cultural past, which holds cultural significance for local communities.

He added that protecting these sites involves balancing conservation with sustainable tourism and suggested the establishment of a joint commission to facilitate cross-fertilisation of ideas and experience.

High Commissioner Shepande indicated his country’s interest in enhancing ties and said the areas mentioned were something to consider.

The two officials also discussed issues related to agriculture (food security and soil quality), climate-resiliency and digital health.

While relations have been cordial between the two countries at the bilateral level, Barbados and Zambia mostly interface at the multilateral level via such institutions as the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States grouping.

During the 1980’s, Barbados assisted Zambia in the development of its human resources by providing secretaries, nurses and teachers. Zambia and Barbados established relations in 1971.
