The Government of Barbados now has a more efficient and effective process of collecting taxes and increasing revenue through the establishment of the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA), a central revenue collecting agency. The BRA was established on April 1, 2014, subsequent to the merger of Barbados’ various tax collecting agencies, including the Inland Revenue and Land Tax Departments, as well as the Value Added Tax Office and the Licensing Authority.
The prime functions of the new BRA include: assessing, collecting and enforcing the payment of taxes, duties, interest, penalties, fees and other sums payable under the specified enactments; advising the Government on matters contained in the Barbados Revenue Authority Act and regarding taxation; and representing Barbados in respect of matters relating to taxation.
New Head of the BRA is Revenue Commissioner Margaret Sivers. At the time of her appointment, Ms. Sivers said, “We, as an Authority, can now get ahead with the business of bringing improved governance and structure to tax administration, working on our interaction with the public to improve tax payer education and voluntary compliance.” The BRA directors are Wayne Forde, former Director of the Land Tax Department; Tyrone Lavine, former Deputy Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department; and Annette Weekes, former Director of VAT.
The BRA’s head office is located in the Treasury Building on the 6th Floor in Bridge Street, Bridgetown. The contact number is (246) 430-3101.
