Barbados’ promotional outreach into the Latin American market continues to yield encouraging results.

Just recently, a Barbados delegation of 18 officials, led by Minister of Industry, International Business, Commerce and Small Business Development, Hon. Donville Inniss, together with representatives of Invest Barbados and several local service providers, visited Mexico City, Mexico and Bogota, Colombia to attend International Business Seminars in both jurisdictions.

The seminars, which were organised by Invest Barbados, were held to highlight to the Latin American market Barbados’ advantages as a reputable and solid international business and financial services centre of choice. This is the second time Invest Barbados has hosted seminars in these two jurisdictions.

Minister Inniss, who delivered the Welcome Address at both events, noted that over the past few years, Invest Barbados had also hosted a number of inward investment seminars to familiarise Latin American clients with the local business environment and introduce them to the Barbados value proposition. Additionally, in 2014 Barbados hosted an international business conference, geared specifically toward the Latin American market.

“We were encouraged by the response to these initiatives which saw us welcoming delegates from Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. We have continued to build on these linkages both at the government and professional level.”

The Minister also acknowledged the relationship between Barbados and the two Latin American nations, which dated back to 1972, when diplomatic ties were first established.

Both seminars attracted approximately 40 persons each from the respective countries’ banking, insurance, wealth management, accounting and legal professions, among others.

Local service providers from Barbados found the seminars “worthwhile”, as many of them utilised this forum to engage their Mexican and Colombian counterparts in various areas of interest relating to the sector and to explore potential opportunities for ongoing collaboration and business development.

Presenters at both events included Mr. Dustin Delany, Principal, Delany Law/Delany Corporate; Mr. Ricardo Knight, President & CEO, JLT Barbados; Mr. Tyson Thompson, International Tax Consultant, Thompson Henry & Associates; and Mrs. Eveliny Arnal-Forde, President, Total Asset Management Services Ltd.
