Barbados’ recent International Business Week Latin American Conference came in for high praise from Ambassador of the Russian Federation, H. E. Nikolay Smirno v, who attended the event. During his visit, the Ambassador also paid a courtesy call on the Barbados Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Maxine McClean at her office.
The Ambassador congratulated Barbados on hosting a successful conference, the flagship event of the International Business Week of activities, which ran from October 5-11 of this year.
Topics discussed by the officials included Barbados’ interest in commencing negotiations for a Double Taxation Agreement as well as the appointment of an Honorary Consular Representative in Russia, and Russia’s desire to carry out marine research in the Caribbean Basin.
According to Senator McClean, the vetting process on choosing an Honorary Consular Representative of Barbados to Russia was completed and the name of the Representative would be submitted to the Barbados Cabinet for approval.
Other matters discussed related to the possibility of marketing Barbados in Russia as a study destination, negotiating a bilateral non-visa arrangement with Barbados and the training opportunities provided by Russia to the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Barbados Fire Service.
Barbados and Russia established diplomatic ties on January 29, 1993.
