Through Invest Barbados, I ask you to consider a "certain-of-success" way in which you might partner with our University in promoting excellence in medical education and medical care in Barbados, i.e. through directly assisting our Faculty of Medical Sciences in our upgrade plans….to transform our School of Medicine into a global Centre of Excellence, a 5 Star Medical Faculty, with direct impact on health care in Barbados and the Caribbean.
We have several major strategic plans, starting with the entry of the initial cohort of first year students in September 2008. With the help of Paul Altman, our Endowment Chairman, and consultant Fund Raiser Penelope Hynam we have created a Development Fund Appeal. Please see the link here to our Appeals brochure for more detailed information. They include:
- The remarkable Medical Museum of Dr. Cecil Cyrus of St. Vincent - acquisition for teaching and opening to the public
- Endowed chairs (professors) in needed sub-specialities such as cardiology, medical education, neurology, psychiatry, chronic diseases etc.
- A basic Science Teaching and Research Library
- Clinical Skills Laboratory for teaching nurses and medical students clinical skills and special Procedures
- A Continuing Medical Education Unit
We would of course recognize our major benefactors in significant ways for posterity - depending on the wish of the benefactors for acknowledgement and recognition for their generosity. Platinum and Gold sponsors (donations US $25,000 and over) will have rooms named after them or their nominees in the brand new Faculty of Medical Sciences building, scheduled to open in October 2009. Contributions can be made to "Faculty of Medical Sciences Appeal Fund", UWI, Cave Hill.
